“Just Crichton and King” libraries

Depressing article at MeFi about how certain libraries are throwing out classic books that haven’t been checked out in a while.
To me this defeats the whole point of a public library system. We need to offer a variety of works to anyone who wishes to view them. A modern library can be egalitarian, enlightening, provocative. I don’t know what my youth would have been like without libraries.
Soon public libraries will be down to only the most popular (and blandest) authors. Why use tax dollars to pay for crap you can buy at the mall?? Maybe it’s some sort of conspiracy to get rid of libraries altogether.
(I see that the picaresque war novel I’m currently reading isn’t in Fairfax’s system. Their loss, this is one of the funniest things I’ve ever read.)
